Planetarium Hosts Community Event

On the evening of Saturday, October 12, 2019, St. Mark’s School of Texas invites the Dallas community to a free planetarium show in the Winn Science Center. Dr. Steve Balog, Cecil H. & Ida Green Master Teaching Chair in Science and the School’s Planetarium Director, will give a guided tour of the October sky, pointing out the planets and constellations visible outside. Then, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the audience will recline in the planetarium’s theater-style seats to watch Man’s First Steps on the Moon, a special presentation produced by the Jenks Planetarium.

“Our hope has always been that the Winn Science Center’s planetarium be an asset for the whole Dallas community,” said Dr. Balog. “This planetarium show will be a great opportunity to learn about the incredible sights visible in the night sky and pay tribute to the Apollo missions that put a man on the moon half a century ago.”

The show will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12. There is no charge, but seating is limited. Register online at www.smtexas.org/PlanetariumShow.

The St. Mark’s planetarium opened earlier this year, as part of St. Mark’s new Winn Science Center. The Winn Science Center, together with the adjoining McDermott-Green Science Building, offer more than 75,000 square feet of state-of-the-art science education facilities. The School’s previous planetarium served the Dallas community for more than half a century, hosting shows for Marksmen as well as thousands of visitors each year, from local school groups to Scouts seeking their astronomy merit badge. Dr. Balog, now in his 25th year teaching at St. Mark’s, is excited to use the new planetarium’s advanced technology to expand the School’s outreach. In addition to astronomy shows, the planetarium offers a wide catalog of educational programs for teaching anatomy, history, biology, chemistry, and much more. If you have questions about the planetarium or would like to inquire about scheduling a show, contact Dr. Balog at Balog@smtexas.org.
